Secretary of State Marco Rubio told foreign ministers from the Group of Seven that the ongoing conflict with Iran is expected to continue for a limited period, projecting a timeline measured in weeks rather than months as U.S. officials assess both diplomatic and military paths forward.
According to reporting by Axios, Rubio informed counterparts during meetings in France that current expectations place the duration of the war at roughly two to four additional weeks. Speaking afterward, Rubio said the United States anticipates the conflict will conclude within “weeks and not months.”
Officials familiar with the discussions said Rubio indicated that communication channels between Washington and Tehran remain indirect, relying on intermediaries rather than direct negotiations. He noted that uncertainty persists regarding decision-making authority within Iran’s leadership, complicating efforts to advance diplomatic engagement.
Rubio said that two Iranian officials have shown interest in pursuing talks with the United States, though any formal negotiations would require authorization from Iran’s senior leadership. He added that communication has been slowed due to security concerns, with Iranian officials reportedly limiting use of electronic devices to avoid detection.
While outlining the potential for diplomacy, Rubio emphasized that the United States remains committed to achieving its objectives in the conflict. At the same time, administration officials are continuing to evaluate options that could expand military involvement, including the possibility of deploying ground forces.
The United States is also awaiting clarity on who would formally represent Iran in any negotiations, according to Rubio’s remarks.
Vice President JD Vance is expected to lead any U.S. delegation should talks proceed, while President Donald Trump has said that Rubio, along with envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, are actively engaged in ongoing diplomatic efforts related to the conflict.
