Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen submitted her resignation after her governing coalition failed to secure a parliamentary majority in the country’s latest general election.
Frederiksen formally stepped down following a meeting with King Frederik, initiating the process of forming a new government. The development was reflected in public reports and statements shared online, including posts here, here, and here.
Her resignation follows an election in which her three-party coalition did not reach the threshold required to retain control of parliament. According to reporting by The Guardian, the coalition secured 70 seats, falling short of the 90 needed for a majority.
“Following last night’s results, Mette Frederiksen has handed in her resignation from the post during her meeting with King Frederik,” the report stated, noting that the move is part of the standard procedure to begin coalition negotiations when no governing majority is achieved.
Despite the resignation, Frederiksen will continue serving as caretaker prime minister while negotiations take place to form a new administration. She is expected to participate in coalition discussions and remains a candidate to lead the next government.
The election outcome reflects a shift in voter support, with opposition parties gaining ground and altering the balance of seats in parliament. Coalition negotiations are expected to determine whether Frederiksen can assemble a governing majority for another term.
