A Colombian military transport aircraft carrying 110 soldiers crashed shortly after departing Puerto Leguízamo in southern Colombia, with authorities confirming the incident while withholding details on casualties and cause.
Footage circulating online, including video shared on X, appears to show the Colombian Air Force C-130 Hercules descending and impacting the ground moments after takeoff in a remote region near the Peruvian border.
Local outlet Blu Radio reported that 110 troops were aboard the aircraft during what was described as a straight-out departure from the airport in the Amazon border zone.
Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez said military units had reached the crash site but emphasized that “the exact number of victims and the causes of the crash have not yet been determined.”
Additional images and recordings from the area, including footage from the crash site and another video showing the aftermath, have surfaced as response efforts continue.
The Colombian Aerospace Force operates a limited fleet of Hercules aircraft, consisting of older C-130B models and newer C-130H variants, with roughly nine planes in service. The loss of one aircraft represents a significant reduction in the country’s airlift capacity.
Officials have not clarified whether the flight was part of a training exercise, a logistical operation, or connected to security developments along Colombia’s southern border.
The crash follows rising regional tensions. Ecuador’s Interior Minister John Reimberg recently deployed 75,000 troops to combat drug cartels, while Colombian President Gustavo Petro warned that the campaign was spilling across borders and that Colombia was being “bombed,” according to a separate post on X.
Authorities have not announced a timeline for further updates as recovery and investigation efforts continue.
