Robert Mueller, the former FBI director and special counsel who oversaw the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, has died at the age of 81, according to a statement from his family.

“With deep sadness, we are sharing the news that Bob passed away last night,” the family said.

Mueller served as special counsel from 2017 to 2019, leading a Justice Department investigation into Moscow’s efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election and examining whether members of Donald Trump’s campaign coordinated with Russia. His appointment came in May 2017, and his team brought multiple charges against individuals and entities, including former Trump associates and Russian nationals.

The investigation resulted in several convictions on charges such as financial crimes and false statements to federal investigators. Mueller’s final report, released in April 2019, concluded that Russia conducted a wide-ranging effort to interfere in the election through hacking operations and social media campaigns. The report did not establish that the Trump campaign conspired with Russia and did not reach a definitive conclusion on obstruction of justice, instead presenting evidence on both sides.

President Donald Trump reacted to Mueller’s death in a statement posted on Truth Social, writing in a message that he was “glad he’s dead.”

“He can no longer hurt innocent people!” Trump wrote.

Mueller had a decades-long career in public service prior to his role as special counsel. He served as director of the FBI from 2001 to 2013 after being appointed by President George W. Bush, leading the agency through the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and overseeing a shift toward counterterrorism operations.

A Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam, Mueller also held several senior roles within the Justice Department before becoming FBI director.

His leadership during the Russia investigation placed him at the center of a highly polarized political environment, where his findings were closely scrutinized and debated.

Additional confirmation of his death and career was reported in coverage noting his service as FBI director and special counsel, including accounts of his role in the investigation, as detailed in additional reporting and national coverage.

Mueller’s passing marks the end of a long career in federal law enforcement and national security, during which he played a central role in some of the most significant investigations in recent U.S. history.
