NEW CITY- As the price of gas reaches $4 per gallon with the US and Israeli attack on Iran continuing, Rockland County officials have approved capping the county’s four percent sales tax at the first $3 per gallon, rather than the full retail price.

The price of gas is ticking up daily as Iran continues its closure of the Strait of Horuz, where 20 percent of the world’s oil passes through.

County Executive Ed Day said while the sales tax cap is “no windfall,” the county is doing “what we can to help families.”

He said while the move is modest, it delivers savings and “continues our efforts to ease costs for residents when and where possible.”

The cap will be in effect from June 1, 2026 through March 1, 2027.

The county took similar action in April 2022, capping sales tax on gas as prices soared due to inflation and the economy was still in post-pandemic economic recovery.

The new legislation, sponsored by Legislator Beth Davidson, said it will bring some relief at the gas pump as families face higher costs for groceries, health care, and home energy.”

Jay Hood Jr. said, “today’s financial strain on residents warranted action by county government.
