Kim Jong Un made a striking public appearance alongside his teenage daughter during a large-scale military exercise, underscoring both the country’s ongoing push to strengthen its armed forces and the growing visibility of a young figure increasingly seen at the center of state symbolism.
State media released images on Friday showing Kim and his daughter riding atop an olive-green battle tank during live-fire drills involving armored units and infantry forces. The event, held a day earlier, featured coordinated maneuvers and weapons testing, with Kim personally overseeing operations and urging troops to accelerate their war readiness.
Photographs from the scene depicted the North Korean leader smiling as he sat on the tank, while his daughter—believed to be Kim Ju Ae—leaned out of the hatch, surrounded by uniformed soldiers. Both were dressed in black leather jackets, presenting a carefully curated image of unity and strength amid the country’s heightened military activity.
According to official reports, Kim used the occasion to emphasize the importance of completing combat preparations, signaling a continued focus on defense capabilities at a time of elevated regional tensions.
The appearance marks the latest in a series of high-profile outings involving Kim’s daughter, who has accompanied him to key military and political events since late 2022. State media has consistently portrayed her in favorable terms, referring to her as his “most beloved” or “respected” child, while publishing images that highlight their close relationship.
In recent days, the pair were also seen participating in activities at a light munitions factory, where they reportedly fired pistols, and observing tests of multiple rocket launch systems. Their joint appearances have extended beyond military settings as well, including a visit to Beijing last year and public celebrations during the New Year, further amplifying her visibility on both domestic and international stages.
The increasing prominence of Kim’s daughter has fueled speculation among analysts about a potential succession plan. South Korea’s intelligence agency recently suggested that Kim may be preparing to position her as a future leader. However, some experts remain cautious about such conclusions, noting Kim’s relatively young age and the deeply entrenched male-dominated structure of North Korea’s ruling elite.
The military drills come against the backdrop of ongoing joint exercises between the United States and South Korea, which Pyongyang has long condemned as rehearsals for invasion. While the allies concluded an 11-day computer-simulated command post exercise on Thursday, field training operations are continuing, maintaining pressure in a region already marked by persistent geopolitical friction.
Kim’s latest appearance, blending military messaging with personal imagery, reflects a dual strategy: reinforcing the state’s readiness for conflict while subtly shaping the narrative around a possible next generation of leadership.
