A coordinated attack involving rockets and drones struck the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad early Tuesday, according to Iraqi security sources, marking one of the most significant assaults on the facility since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israel war with Iran.

Security officials said at least five drones and multiple rockets were launched from areas surrounding the Iraqi capital. Witnesses reported seeing several drones traveling toward the embassy complex located inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone.

According to a Reuters witness, the embassy’s C-RAM air defense system intercepted two of the incoming drones, while a third drone penetrated the compound. The impact was followed by visible fire and smoke rising from inside the embassy grounds.

A separate explosion was also heard across the city, another witness said.

Efforts to contact the U.S. Embassy for comment were unsuccessful, as embassy-issued mobile phones were reportedly switched off at the time of inquiries.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with Iranian-backed militias increasing strikes on U.S. assets in Iraq following the start of the broader conflict on Feb. 28.

On Monday, the Iran-aligned group Kataib Hezbollah announced the death of a senior commander and spokesperson. Separately, Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces reported that airstrikes in the western town of al-Qaim, near the Syrian border, killed at least eight of its fighters.

In response to the embassy attack, Iraqi security forces were deployed throughout Baghdad, and authorities moved to seal off the Green Zone, which houses key government institutions and foreign diplomatic missions.

Officials have not released details on casualties or the extent of damage within the embassy compound. The situation remained under active monitoring as security forces maintained heightened alert across the capital.
