Bruno Fernandes edged closer to rewriting Premier League history after delivering another influential display in Manchester United’s 3–1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday.

The Portuguese playmaker provided assists for two of United’s goals, raising his league total for the campaign to 16 and moving within striking distance of the single-season benchmark of 20, jointly held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. With as many as eight matches still remaining, Fernandes has a realistic opportunity to set a new standard for creative output in England’s top flight.

Beyond the individual milestone, the result carried major significance for United’s broader ambitions. The win marked a seventh triumph in nine matches under head coach Michael Carrick, a surge in form that has propelled the club firmly into third place in the standings. United now holds a three-point advantage over fourth-placed Villa, tightening its grip on a coveted qualification spot for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Fernandes’ contributions also ensured he surpassed the club’s previous single-season Premier League assist record of 15, set by David Beckham during the 1999–2000 campaign. In doing so, he reached a personal milestone of 100 assists in all competitions for United, underlining his central role in the team’s attacking identity. While acknowledging the achievement, Fernandes stressed that securing a top-four finish and restoring United’s presence among Europe’s elite remained the squad’s primary objective.

The match itself developed into a competitive encounter after a tight first half. United broke the deadlock early in the second period when Casemiro rose to head home from a precisely delivered Fernandes corner in the 53rd minute. Villa responded through Ross Barkley, whose equaliser briefly threatened to shift the momentum.

However, Fernandes once again proved decisive, setting up Matheus Cunha to restore United’s lead with a composed finish past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. The home side’s resistance was effectively ended when substitute Benjamin Šeško struck late on, continuing his prolific run of form with an eighth goal in 10 appearances. The victory also allowed United to trim the gap to second-placed Manchester City to seven points, maintaining outside hopes of climbing higher before the season concludes.

Elsewhere in the league, the battle to avoid relegation intensified as Nottingham Forest climbed out of the bottom three following a goalless draw against Fulham. The single point proved sufficient on goal difference after Forest had slipped into the drop zone a day earlier.

A similar stalemate unfolded between Crystal Palace and Leeds United, a result that nonetheless helped Leeds edge further away from immediate danger. Sitting 15th with 32 points, the Yorkshire side now holds a four-point cushion over the relegation places. The afternoon might have yielded even greater reward had striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin converted a first-half penalty opportunity.

Leeds’ resilience was further tested when defender Gabriel Gudmundsson was sent off before halftime, forcing the visitors to navigate the remainder of the match with 10 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, they held firm to secure a valuable point that could prove decisive in the closing weeks of the campaign.

With the race for Champions League qualification and the struggle for survival both intensifying, the latest round of fixtures highlighted the mounting pressure and fine margins shaping the final phase of the Premier League season. As Fernandes continues his pursuit of history and United pushes to consolidate its position among England’s elite, attention now turns to the remaining matches that will determine both European dreams and top-flight futures.
