The December sky over Weimar hangs low and gray as I walk along the Esplanade. The poplars lining the street stand bare, their branches like scribbled lines against the leaden light. It is the afternoon, the hour when this city grows strangely still—as if holding its breath. Somewhere a church clock strikes three. The ground is frozen, my footsteps sound hollow on the pavement.
