An explosion lightly damaged a Jewish school in Amsterdam early Saturday, prompting strong condemnation from city officials who described the incident as a deliberate act targeting the Jewish community.

The blast occurred at the school located in an upscale residential neighborhood in the southern part of the Dutch capital. According to local authorities, the explosion damaged a rainpipe and scorched part of the building’s outer wall. No injuries were reported, but the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of Jewish institutions in the city.

Femke Halsema, the mayor of Amsterdam, said authorities are treating the attack with the utmost seriousness. She described the explosion as a cowardly act directed at the Jewish community and announced that security measures would be strengthened around Jewish schools, synagogues, and other institutions throughout the city.

“This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community,” Halsema said, adding that Jewish residents in Amsterdam have increasingly faced incidents of antisemitism in recent years. She emphasized that such acts are unacceptable and that the city is committed to ensuring the safety of all communities.

The targeted school holds particular significance within the Netherlands’ Jewish population. It is the only institution in the country specifically dedicated to Orthodox Jewish education. Because of past threats and security concerns, the school is already heavily protected, surrounded by fencing and a pointed metal outer wall designed to limit access and provide an additional layer of security.

Authorities believe the existing security measures helped limit potential damage and prevented the situation from becoming more serious. Police quickly secured the area following the explosion and launched an investigation to determine how the attack was carried out and who may have been responsible.

The explosion came amid heightened security concerns for Jewish communities in the Netherlands and across Europe. In recent days, security around Jewish institutions in Amsterdam had already been increased following a suspected arson attack at a synagogue in Rotterdam late Friday night.

Similar incidents have also occurred in neighboring countries. Earlier in the week, an explosion triggered a fire at a synagogue in Liege, in Belgium, further raising alarm among authorities and community leaders about a possible wave of attacks targeting Jewish sites.

Rob Jetten, the Prime Minister of Netherlands, condemned the attack in Amsterdam and expressed concern for the Jewish community. In a statement shared on social media, he described the explosion as “horrible” and acknowledged that it would understandably cause fear and anger among Jewish residents.

“The safety of Jewish institutions has our full attention,” Jetten wrote, emphasizing that the government is working closely with local authorities and security agencies to ensure protective measures remain strong.

Officials across Europe have been increasingly concerned about the safety of Jewish communities as geopolitical tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East. Recent military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran, along with Iran’s subsequent responses, have heightened fears that related tensions could spill over into attacks or threats against Jewish institutions abroad.

Security experts warn that such developments often lead to spikes in antisemitic incidents, including threats, vandalism, and targeted violence. Governments and law enforcement agencies in several countries have responded by strengthening protective measures around synagogues, schools, and community centers.

Investigators in Amsterdam are continuing to gather evidence and review surveillance footage from the surrounding neighborhood to determine how the explosion was carried out. Police have not yet announced any arrests, but officials say identifying those responsible remains a top priority.

Community leaders have urged residents to remain vigilant while also calling for unity and calm. Authorities have reassured the public that additional security resources are being deployed to protect vulnerable sites across the city.

Although the physical damage from the explosion was relatively limited, officials say the symbolic impact of the attack is significant. For many residents and community members, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding religious and cultural institutions and ensuring that acts of hate or intimidation are met with swift and decisive responses.
