Washington DC, Brian Mast said the Iranian people and opposition resistance groups represent the main force capable of ending the country’s clerical rule and establishing a democratic government.
In remarks addressing the political situation in Iran, Mast accused the ruling Velayat-e Faqih system of long-standing repression against its citizens, including arrests, torture, and killings during protests. He argued that the government also poses a broader security threat through its regional activities and support for armed groups.
Mast said the Iranian leadership has pursued aggressive policies beyond its borders through organizations such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, its elite Quds Force, and allied groups including Hezbollah and the Houthis.
According to Mast, the Iranian government faces growing pressure domestically due to economic hardship and repeated public protests. He said Iranian citizens and opposition “Resistance Units” have increasingly challenged the country’s security apparatus.
Mast also criticized reports of a potential transfer of power to Mojtaba Khamenei following the reported death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, describing it as an attempt to preserve the existing political system.
He expressed support for the opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran and its leader Maryam Rajavi, noting that the group has proposed a transitional political framework based on Rajavi’s 10-point plan aimed at establishing a democratic and non-nuclear republic.
Mast said international support for democratic change in Iran has grown, citing backing from figures including Mike Pence and Giulio Terzi.
He concluded by emphasizing what he described as the right of the Iranian people to determine their country’s future and called for continued pressure on the Iranian leadership until a democratic transition takes place.
