That sentiment has increasingly become the prevailing cry among moviegoers who have grown weary of what many perceive as regurgitated fare. Yet at times those calls seem to fall on deaf ears, as the opposite trend often appears more prevalent. The disconnect suggests a widening gap between audience desire and industry output. However, Pixar may have received an unexpected nudge when the numbers rolled in for its 2026 animated feature Hoppers.
Suddenly, the old saying seems relevant once again: if you build it, they will come.
What is Hoppers?

Hoppers is an animated concept that blends advanced technology with the natural world. Per the synopsis,
The story centers on Mabel, voiced by Piper Curda, an avid animal lover who longs to better understand the creatures she admires. When a new technology becomes available, she takes the opportunity to “hop” her consciousness into a life-like robotic beaver, allowing her to communicate directly with animals.
The premise offers a literal interpretation of the idea of walking in another’s shoes—or perhaps more fittingly, inhabiting another creature’s skin. Through that experience, Mabel gains insight into perspectives she likely would never have encountered otherwise.
A Breath of Fresh Air

The gamble on a fresh concept appears to have paid off. According to Variety,
Pixar’s family-friendly Hoppers debuted at No. 1 with a strong $46 million opening from roughly 4,000 theaters domestically. The film added another $42 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $88 million during its opening window. Critical and audience reactions were equally enthusiastic, with a 94 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” grade from CinemaScore audiences.
The Move Forward
Those results appear to have reinforced the studio’s confidence in developing new material. Reports indicate Pixar is expanding its slate of original animated projects alongside its established franchises. As ComingSoon.net notes, the studio is currently exploring several new productions as it broadens its lineup of original storytelling. That does not mean Pixar is abandoning its existing intellectual properties. Beloved franchises remain firmly in the pipeline, including Toy Story 5, The Incredibles 3, Coco 2, and Monsters, Inc. 3.
At the same time, Pixar appears increasingly willing to revisit the creative spirit that once defined the studio—bold, unexpected storytelling built on entirely new ideas. One rumored project currently in development is Ono Ghost Market, described as
a feature inspired by Asian folklore about supernatural marketplaces where the worlds of the living and the dead intersect. Initially conceived as a streaming series, the project is now reportedly being developed as a theatrical film.
Has Pixar Found the Right Formula
For animation fans, the news is encouraging. And for those who have been shouting from the rafters that it is time for something new, the message may finally be reaching the right ears. Sometimes it simply takes time for the distance between audience demand and industry response to close.
