Fireworks will once again illuminate Mount Rushmore during Independence Day celebrations this year after a five-year absence, according to an announcement by the National Park Service as the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding.
A report published by Just the News said federal officials confirmed the return of the large-scale display at the South Dakota landmark. The fireworks show is scheduled for Friday, July 3, and will serve as a centerpiece of the national Independence Day observances tied to the historic anniversary.
Public attendance will be limited, with access determined through a lottery system. The National Park Service said the drawing for tickets will take place from April 8 through April 12, allowing selected members of the public to attend the celebration at the Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
Officials said the event is being organized jointly with the State of South Dakota and is intended to highlight the historic symbolism of the monument, which features the carved likenesses of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.
“In partnership with the State of South Dakota, we are excited to reinstate a spectacular fireworks show as the highlight of Mount Rushmore’s Independence Day commemoration,” Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks Dr. Jenifer Chatfield said.
“We invite the public to enjoy the show and reflect on our nation’s remarkable journey and the great patriotic leaders who established, preserved and expanded our country’s destiny,” Chatfield added.
South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden also welcomed the return of the celebration, emphasizing the significance of the upcoming anniversary year.
“In just a few short months, our nation will throw the biggest birthday party ever for the United States of America,” Rhoden said. “South Dakota is the freest state in a nation founded on the principles of freedom, so it is only fitting to celebrate in our backyard. We look forward to celebrating at the iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial!”
The fireworks display had not been held at the monument in recent years after repeated denials by federal officials during the Biden administration.
In 2021, a post circulated highlighting that the National Park Service rejects request for July 4 fireworks at Mount Rushmore, reflecting earlier decisions that prevented the event from taking place.
The newly announced celebration restores the long-standing tradition at one of the nation’s most recognizable memorials as preparations accelerate nationwide for events commemorating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
