NEWBURGH – A proposal by Newburgh Police Chief Brandan Rola to subscribe to the ClearView AI facial recognition program was rejected by the entire city council Monday night after dozens of residents said it could be used by ICE to racially profile and target individuals.
Council members including Giselle Martinez were not critical of the police department, though.
“Specifically, with ClearView, my issue is not with our chief or with police department. It’s more specifically the software and the company itself that has had a history of privacy violations as well as we can’t, we don’t have jurisdiction over ClearView,” she said. “If ClearView were to turn over that data, as much as we would be against it, we wo0uldn’t be able to do anything.”
The city council, Monday night, also voted to reaffirm the prohibition of the use of City of Newburgh personnel and resources for civil immigration enforcement and reaffirming the Newburgh as a fair and welcoming city.
