Business Impact: Iran naming Mojtaba Khamenei as Supreme Leader signals hardliner control for years to come. That means prolonged uncertainty in the Strait of Hormuz and higher energy costs for every company that moves goods or runs machinery. Executives who think this is just another headline are about to feel it in fuel surcharges, supply-chain delays, and squeezed margins. ¹
Financial Impact Oil has already surged past $100 a barrel amid the chaos. Markets are volatile, inflation fears are rising, and the Fed is likely to keep rates higher longer. Investors and retirees with exposure to transportation, manufacturing, or broad-market funds could see real erosion in returns if this drags on. ²
Political Impact The mainstream narrative says this is just another leadership shuffle and the war will end quickly. Reuters and others are framing it as a short-term spike. I disagree. This is a deliberate hardening of the regime that defies President Trump and raises the stakes for American energy security and our troops in the region. ³
My Personal Take
I’ve been in these waters. As a young sailor aboard the USS La Salle during Operation Earnest Will, my primary duty was First Lieutenant’s yeoman — administrative manager — but I also served as the ship’s Search-and-Rescue swimmer, charged with pulling downed U.S. helicopter pilots from the Persian Gulf. I was onboard when the Iraqi missiles slammed into the USS Stark; I helped fight those fires. Later in Rota, Spain, I served as the yeoman for the base Commanding Officer, Family Service Center, and Air Operations Commander while working side-by-side with the Naval Flight Surgeon training NATO pilots and aircrew on emergency water egress procedures across Europe.
From 1992–1997 at Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 21 I served as the Chief Yeoman, network officer, and legal officer — earning my Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist designation. In 2010 I was one of only two people selected nationwide out of 900+ applicants for a direct commission from the President of the United States as a US Navy Intelligence Officer. I earned my Information Dominance Warfare Officer qualification and, in that role, had global military intelligence responsibilities.
Then and afterwards, I sat at the executive table with Fortune 500 CEOs, COOs, and CFOs, ran global operations protecting hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue, built a financial advisory practice from scratch at Edward Jones into a multi-million-dollar book of business, managed operations for $1.3 billion in client assets at one of the largest and most successful wealth management firms in the country, and now steward multi-million dollar annual budgets and multi-million-dollar investments for nonprofit organizations.
I’ve spent my life protecting American interests — first in uniform, then in the boardroom. So when Reuters and the mainstream press downplay Mojtaba Khamenei’s appointment as just another hardliner shuffle that won’t change much, I have to speak up. This is not a short-term story. This is a regime doubling down on confrontation. Weakness invited the current crisis; strength is the only way out. My grandsons (the second arriving any day now) deserve to inherit an America that controls its own energy destiny — not one held hostage by Tehran.
The Full Story
Reuters reported today that Iran named Mojtaba Khamenei, the hardline son of the slain leader, as the new Supreme Leader, signaling that hardliners remain firmly in charge while oil prices surged past $100 a barrel.¹ The piece frames the move as defiance but suggests markets may stabilize quickly and the conflict could wind down soon.
I respect good reporting, but this one misses the bigger picture. Mojtaba is not a moderate. He’s a cleric with deep ties to the IRGC and a track record of crushing dissent. His elevation tells every hardliner in Iran: the revolution continues. That directly threatens the Strait of Hormuz — the same waters I operated in decades ago — and puts upward pressure on global energy prices for the long haul. ²
President Trump is right to demand unconditional surrender and keep the pressure on. America First means securing our energy independence, protecting our troops, and refusing to let Tehran dictate the price at the pump or the safety of our people. ³
What This Means for You
Corporate executives: Review fuel-hedging contracts and accelerate supplier diversification now — don’t wait for the next spike. Investors: Look for domestic energy producers and companies with strong balance sheets that can weather higher input costs; consider trimming exposure to pure transportation and retail plays until the picture clears. Business owners: Lock in rates where possible, tighten logistics, and communicate transparently with customers — small and mid-sized firms feel these hits first. Those who are financially independent: Revisit fixed-income and inflation-protected holdings. The long-term play is still American energy dominance — the same principle I learned in the Navy and applied at the executive table.
Bottom line: The mainstream press wants to treat this as a temporary headline. I’ve lived the reality of these waters and helped lead billion-dollar operations that would be crushed by prolonged instability. Weakness is not an option. Strong leadership, energy independence, and American resolve are the only path forward.
