NEW YORK – On-premises retailers, including but not limited to bars, restaurants, and hotels, are now able to purchase wine or liquor from a liquor store after nearly a century of being limited to buying spirits directly from licensed wholesalers. The new state law took effect last week.
Retailers will be able to purchase up to six bottles a week from a liquor store, giving establishments an opportunity to restock their inventory in between deliveries or to make the purchase of small quantities of product.
The law doesn’t limit the size of the bottles, but the six-bottle limit is the cumulative limit from all liquor stores and applies to the total of liquor and wine, not each. The State Liquor Authority and Tax Department will not need to implement any regulations or provisions for the new law to go into effect.
