Just when you think it is always the end, you learn that endings are merely new beginnings. According to current media reports, the Ghostbusters are coming back, though this time, they will be a little more animated.
They’re Back!!!
industry news confirms that the Ghostbusters will once again return to take care of those ectoplasmic pests. As revealed in a recent podcast,
“There’s a movie, an animated movie. And an animated series,” on the way. Is it shocking?
Well, nothing is quite a shock in Hollywood anymore.
following the release of the 2024 Ghostbusters film a 2024 article in The Direct underscored,
“The writer behind the latest Ghostbusters film confirmed that there are active discussions about telling more stories in the franchise on the big screen.”
Whether that statement was inclusionary of these newly announced projects remains unclear, but the best bet is extremely likely.
A Legacy of Animation

The Real Ghostbusters. The American Broadcasting Company”
For those who were around in the 1980s when the Ghostbusters franchise was first introduced, it was not long before an animated television series followed. Screen Rant notes,
“Upon the success of 1984’s Ghostbusters, both Filmation and Columbia began work on an animated series to capitalize on the quirky horror-comedy.”
Both Filmation’s and Columbia’s versions ran simultaneously. As Screen Rant continued,
“Entitled the Real Ghostbusters as a jab at Filmation’s unrelated Ghostbusters cartoon airing simultaneously, the show ran for 140 episodes over the course of seven seasons, taking place shortly after the events of the 1984 movie.”
As a child of that era, Ghostbusters was prime Saturday morning viewing. However, that generation would not be the only one to get a taste of the ecto-fighting syndicate. In the late 1990s, the Ghostbusters were reintroduced in an animated series entitled Extreme Ghostbusters. And here we are, decades later, on the precipice of yet another reintroduction—proving that when something sticks, it sticks.
What We Know So Far
Not much has been released regarding plot details. However, as a small hint of what might tickle the anticipating viewer’s fancy, a name has been dropped for the animated feature. According to ComingSoon.net, the film is revealed to be titled Ecto. As for what little has been noted regarding the plot, per Jeff Sneider,
“The movie I’m told is called Ecto. Told from the ghost perspective.”
When can fans expect to see these projects come to fruition? The jury is still out. ComingSoon.net notes that production on the feature began approximately four years ago. As for the animated series, Gil Kenan—who also served as director of the most recent installment in the film franchise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire—noted,
“We are in very active development on our animated series that we’re producing with Netflix.”
Stay Tuned
Fans will have to hold tight and stay tuned. If there is something strange in your neighborhood, you might have to hold those calls for a little while longer.
