During a recent appearance on Saturday in America on the Fox News Channel, Democratic Congressman Henry Cuellar of Texas spoke candidly about the long and tense relationship between the United States and Iran.
According to Cuellar, the conflict between the two nations has effectively been ongoing for nearly half a century, and he believes recent actions taken by the United States were justified.
Cuellar explained that tensions between the United States and the Iranian government date back approximately 47 years, spanning multiple presidential administrations from both major political parties. He emphasized that the challenges posed by Iran have not been limited to a single era or administration, but instead have been recognized by both Democratic and Republican leaders over the decades.
“For 47 years, Iran has been at war with the United States,” Cuellar said during the interview. He noted that successive presidents have been aware of Iran’s hostility and its involvement in activities that have threatened American interests around the world.
The Texas lawmaker pointed out that despite years of rising tensions and ongoing confrontations, decisive action had often been avoided or delayed. He credited former President Donald Trump for ultimately choosing to respond more directly to what he described as Iran’s aggressive behavior.
“Both Democratic and Republican presidents have seen this over the past 47 years,” Cuellar stated. “But it was President Trump that decided to take action.”
Cuellar also highlighted what he believes are serious and longstanding grievances against Iran. He said the country has been responsible for actions that have harmed Americans both overseas and at home. According to him, Iran-backed groups have been linked to attacks that killed U.S. service members and threatened American citizens.
“We can’t forget that the Iranians have killed American soldiers,” Cuellar said. “We cannot forget that they’ve targeted American citizens in our homeland.”
Because of these factors, Cuellar argued that stronger measures were inevitable and necessary. He described the recent U.S. response as a long-awaited step after decades of confrontation and threats.
“Finally, we took some action,” he concluded. “And it’s the right thing to do.”
Cuellar’s remarks come as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to shape discussions in Washington about national security, military strategy, and the future of American involvement in conflicts across the Middle East.
Lawmakers from both parties remain divided on how aggressively the United States should respond to Iran, but the issue remains a central topic in the ongoing debate over U.S. foreign policy.
