President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has removed Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security and intends to nominate Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma to lead the department.
The president said Mullin will assume the role effective March 31, pending confirmation by the Senate.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said he had selected the Oklahoma senator to take over leadership of the Department of Homeland Security while assigning Noem to a new diplomatic role connected to a regional security initiative.
“I am pleased to announce that the Highly Respected United States Senator from the Great State of Oklahoma, Markwayne Mullin, will become the United States Secretary of Homeland Security (DHS), effective March 31, 2026,” Trump said in a statement shared on Truth Social.
Trump said Noem will transition to a new position as Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas, a security initiative focused on the Western Hemisphere that the administration plans to formally unveil during an event scheduled in Doral, Florida.
“The current Secretary, Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas,” Trump wrote.
The president also praised Mullin’s political background and described him as a strong advocate for the administration’s policy priorities.
“Serving 10 years in the United States House of Representatives, and 3 in the Senate, Markwayne has done a tremendous job representing the wonderful People of Oklahoma,” Trump said.
He added that Mullin has been a consistent supporter of the administration’s political agenda.
“A MAGA Warrior, and former undefeated professional MMA fighter, Markwayne truly gets along well with people, and knows the Wisdom and Courage required to Advance our America First Agenda,” Trump said.
Trump also highlighted Mullin’s background as the only Native American currently serving in the Senate and said the senator has been an advocate for tribal communities.
“As the only Native American in the Senate, Markwayne is a fantastic advocate for our incredible Tribal Communities,” the president wrote.
If confirmed, Mullin would take charge of the agency responsible for immigration enforcement, border security, disaster response, and national security coordination within the United States.
Trump said Mullin will focus on continuing the administration’s efforts to strengthen border enforcement and combat illegal immigration.
“Markwayne will work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN,” Trump said.
The announcement follows earlier reporting indicating the president had been considering replacing Noem. A report from The Wall Street Journal, citing advisers familiar with internal discussions, stated that Trump was preparing to dismiss the Homeland Security secretary. The report was shared publicly in a post from The Wall Street Journal.
Separate reporting indicated that Trump had expressed dissatisfaction with Noem’s performance during recent congressional hearings. According to NBC News, the president had been discussing his concerns with Republican lawmakers and weighing possible leadership changes at the department.
NBC News reported that Trump had spoken with lawmakers and advisers about his frustration with the secretary’s handling of issues related to advertising campaigns and policy decisions during the hearings. The report said multiple sources familiar with the discussions indicated the president was considering a leadership change at the agency, according to NBC News.
Mullin’s nomination will now move to the Senate, where lawmakers must vote to confirm him before he can formally assume the role leading the Department of Homeland Security.
