I served aboard the USS La Salle (AGF-3) from early 1987 to mid-1989 as part of the US Navy’s Middle East Force. During part of my time aboard, the United States Navy conducted Operation Earnest Will whereby US Navy warships escorted oil tankers which had been “reflagged” with American flags through the Persian Gulf and out the Strait of Hormuz (and into the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, as well) so as to keep vital energy supplies flowing, free from Iranian threats of destruction. Those missions required steady resolve and clear leadership under President Reagan. We collectively protected commercial shipping from threats so businesses and families could count on reliable energy. That experience left a lasting impression on me about the importance of American strength at sea, and our continuing need to dominate the global shipping lanes of commerce.

Fast forward 38 years and the more things have changed, the more they have remained the same. Today President Trump has proposed something very similar. He has offered US Navy escorts along with insurance support to restart tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, once again because Iran is threatening to destroy these tankers. This practical step on the part of the president addresses the immediate disruptions caused by the current Iran conflict. It shows the same focus on protecting global commerce that I witnessed firsthand decades ago. As a veteran who completed 15 years of honorable service across a total timespan of nearly 30 years (additional details in my profile bio below), I personally appreciate leadership that puts American interests first without unnecessary delay.¹

From a business perspective, the stakes are clear. Higher fuel costs are already pressuring transportation companies, manufacturing operations, and retailers. Small businesses with limited margins feel these increases most acutely. When energy prices rise unexpectedly, it affects everything from supply chains to consumer spending. President Trump’s offer aims to restore stability quickly so companies can plan with greater confidence and families can avoid extra burdens at the pump and grocery stores. ²

The longer-term answer goes beyond US Navy warship escorts. It lies in achieving true American energy dominance through expanded domestic production and infrastructure. When the United States leads in energy output, we reduce dependence on any external region, including those most volatile regions on which we depend today, and simultaneously strengthen our economy at home. My years in corporate leadership have taught me that reliable energy is the foundation for growth and opportunity. Policies that support domestic drilling and innovation align directly with that principle. ³

I’m encouraged by this measured and decisive approach. It reflects the patriotism and practicality that have always defined our nation at its best. I believe thoughtful action like this helps strengthen America for current and future generations. President Trump’s proposal honors the legacy of past service, while pointing toward a stronger, more independent future. It’s a reminder that when we lead with strength and common sense, our businesses. our military. our communities, and Americans in every corner of the country all benefit.
