NEW CITY – Three cases of measles this year in Rockland County have been linked to international tourists visiting Rockland County, health officials said.

Residents who were exposed to those cases have been identified, notified and are being monitored.

“Measles and its complications can be severe, but are preventable,” said County Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Leahy. “Vaccination is the single best way to protect yourself and those around you, including infants, toddlers, and people with weakening immune systems.”

She said if you are unsure of your immunity, you should get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Measles is considered the world’s most contagious disease and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left the area.

About 90 percent of unvaccinated people exposed to the virus will become infected, and one infected person can spread the virus to up to 18 others, health officials said.

Leahy said increased international and domestic travel increases the risk of additional cases appearing in Rockland County throughout the year.
