CARMEL – Calling individuals with developmental disabilities “valued members of our communities,” the Putnam Legislature last week proclaimed March as Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.

Meeting at the historic Putnam Courthouse in Carmel, Legislator Nancy Montgomery invited a number of the disabled to the lectern advising them: “Putnam County strives to build acceptance and inclusion in all aspects of society, not only because it is right but because it brings potential for growth and understanding.”

Montgomery noted that “Putnam County realizes all of its residents, disabled and non-disabled alike are a most important resource striving to think “differently daily” and by raising the awareness about developmental disabilities foster understanding, acceptance and inclusion.”

The lawmaker said, “Promoting the rights and opportunities of individuals with developmental disabilities ensures they can lead fulfilling and independent lives, while increasing public awareness breaks down barriers that increases support for the disabled and their families.”
