Ecuadorean and United States military forces have launched coordinated operations in Ecuador against groups the US military has labelled as designated terrorist organisations, in a bid to disrupt escalating illicit drug trafficking in the country, the US Southern Command announced on Tuesday.
The joint action, first revealed by the Southern Command on social media, marks a significant expansion of cooperation between the two nations’ security forces, though specific details about the nature, scale and locations of the operations have not been disclosed.
The announcement follows statements by Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa earlier this week, who said Washington was among “regional allies” participating in a “new phase” of Ecuador’s campaign against powerful drug cartels that have turned the country into a major transit hub for cocaine shipments bound for international markets. Ecuador’s strategic Pacific ports and its borders with leading cocaine producers Colombia and Peru have made it a key conduit in global drug trafficking networks.
While the Southern Command called the joint action “decisive” in confronting “narco-terrorists” accused of fueling violence and corruption, it stopped short of outlining operational specifics. Southern Command commander Marine Gen. Francis L. Donovan praised the partnership and the commitment of Ecuadorian forces in confronting the threat.
The move comes amid broader efforts by the Trump administration to intensify counter-narcotics actions in the region, including expanded air and sea strikes on suspected drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific. This operation in Ecuador appears to represent the first ground-level engagement by US forces alongside local troops against cartel-linked groups.
Ecuador has also imposed domestic security measures, such as curfews in several provinces to combat crime linked to trafficking, underscoring the growing internal pressures facing President Noboa’s government.
As the operation develops, observers will be watching for further updates on objectives, outcomes and potential implications for regional security cooperation.
