President Donald Trump pushed back forcefully against criticism from prominent conservative commentators over his administration’s joint U.S.–Israel military campaign targeting Iran, declaring in a phone conversation that the Make America Great Again movement remains firmly identified with him.
In a call with journalist Rachael Bade of The Inner Circle, detailed in her exclusive report here, Trump responded to opposition voiced by Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson regarding the ongoing strikes.
“I think that MAGA is Trump — MAGA’s not the other two,” Trump said. “MAGA wants to see our country thrive and be safe. And MAGA loves what I’m doing — every aspect of it… This is a detour that we have to take in order to keep our country safe and keep other countries safe, frankly.”
The military operation, which began Saturday, has targeted Iran’s missile systems, naval assets and senior regime leadership, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The campaign follows stalled negotiations that administration officials argue Tehran used to continue advancing its nuclear program.
Six U.S. service members have been confirmed killed during the operation. Iranian casualties include regime officials and civilians.
Trump underscored his rationale for the offensive, stating, “I have to do what’s right, number one — and you can’t have Iran getting a nuclear weapon. That’s predominant to me.”
Kelly, who previously supported Trump in the last election cycle, publicly questioned the purpose of U.S. involvement during a recent broadcast. In remarks aired on her program and shared online here, she said: “Look, there are massive divisions over what we’ve done here… no one should have to die for a foreign country. I don’t think those four service members died for the United States. I think they died for Iran or for Israel.”
She added: “I understand how this helps Iran perfectly well. I get it… But our government’s job is not to look out for Iran or for Israel. It’s to look out for us. This feels very much, to me, like it is clearly Israel’s war. Mark Levin wanted it. It’s his war. Ben Shapiro, Lindsey Graham, Miriam Adelson — that’s obvious. They’re the ones who’ve been pushing us into it.”
Trump responded directly to Kelly’s criticism, saying: “MegYn was opposed to me for years when I ran the first time and nothing stopped me. Some people are against — and they always come back. She came all the way back. But now I guess she maybe doesn’t like the idea of this war, but I do because I have to keep nuclear weapons out of the hands of the Iranians.” He added that Kelly should “study her history book a little bit.”
Carlson, who reportedly visited the White House in recent weeks to argue against military intervention, described the strikes as “absolutely disgusting and evil.” Trump dismissed the remarks, telling Bade that Carlson “can say whatever he wants; it has no impact on me.”
The exchange was highlighted in a post by Bade on X here, noting Trump’s reaction to both commentators.
The controversy sparked immediate reaction online. Social media personality Catturd wrote in a post here:
“Always remember the first TDS never Trump loser was Megyn Kelly… Once Trump won again, she suddenly was all in on Trump with her podcast, and now she’s turning on him again… This flip-flopping stone, cold loser will do anything for a buck… DANCE MEGYN DANCE!”
Commentator Dave Rubin posted here:
“Megyn Kelly’s transformation into heel is fully complete. Imagine thinking Trump doesn’t make the decisions. And that somehow he, JD, Rubio, Hegseth etc., were tricked into this by podcasters and radio hosts.”
Sloan Rachmuth wrote in a separate post here:
“According to Megyn Kelly, President Trump and Marco Rubio are under the thumb of American Jews. There we have it: she’s an antisemite AND a Democrat.”
Another post from Gina Milan stated here:
“Megyn Kelly saying our fallen American soldiers died ‘for Israel’ is absolute evil. It’s disgusting, disgraceful, and she’s complete … trash.”
Kelly later defended her position, saying during a follow-up segment shared online here:
“I support the President… Being a conservative or being a Trump supporter… does not mean you have to accept another Middle East war without questions. And anybody who tells you that can suck it.”
Trump has outlined a four-part objective for the campaign: destroying Iran’s missile capabilities, eliminating its naval threat, preventing the regime from acquiring a nuclear weapon, and stopping Tehran from arming and directing proxy forces abroad.
Administration officials argue Iran has long financed and directed militant groups across the Middle East and pursued ballistic missile expansion and nuclear capability. Trump’s position, consistent with his stated doctrine of “peace through strength,” is that failing to act would create greater instability in the future.
The dispute reflects a visible split within conservative media circles over the scope of U.S. military engagement in Iran, even as the administration maintains that the campaign is rooted in national security priorities.
