President Trump presented Medals of Honor to WWII and Vietnam veterans during his State of the Union address on February 24, 2026. Recipients included Chief Warrant Officer Eric Slover and Captain E. Royce Williams, recognized for their extraordinary valor. Trump described Williams as a “legend” for his classified Korean War exploits that remained secret for decades (Fox News, 2026). This moment celebrated timeless American heroism and reminded us of the sacrifices that built our nation. I firmly support these awards. They honor the selfless service that allows us to enjoy the freedoms we have today and inspire unity in a divided time.
My background gives me a unique perspective on why these recognitions deeply matter. Like so many before and since me, I served honorably in the US Navy for 15 years across three periods that spanned nearly 30 years (1986-1990, 1991-1997, and 2010-2015). My roles included serving my shipmates simultaneously as the ship First Lieutenant’s yeoman as well as its Search and Rescue helicopter-based crewman on the USS LaSalle (AGF-3) in the Persian Gulf from March 1987 to May 1989, at NAVSTA Rota Spain from May 1989 to May 1991, with the NMCB-21 Seabee Battalion at NAES Lakehurst NJ as the battalion administrative enlisted officer (selected for E-7 before separating as a drilling reservist from April 1992 to May 1997), and as an Intelligence Officer at COMPACFLT 0270 at NAS JRB Fort Worth from April 2010 to May 2015, earning the designations of Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist and Information Dominance Warfare Officer along with a total of 17 medals and awards (including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Multiple Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon) over that time. I understand the true cost of duty. These experiences taught me that honoring heroes is not just about the past. It builds morale for current service members and motivates future generations to step up when called.
After a cursory review through X, I realize that many others also share my sentiment. For example, @CharlieK_news posted “President Trump is getting praise across the country after he noticed active-duty military members at the MELANIA premiere — and personally invited them to his private suite 🇺🇸🇺🇸 That’s why morale is soaring right now. Trump honors and respects our troops” (CharlieK_news, 2026). Gestures like this show real respect. Similarly @TheCriticalDri1 wrote “State of the Union absolutely has blown me away. President Trump has honored TWO new Medal of Honor recipients as of the speech amongst so many other things. It’s not a show it’s showcasing the best of America and Americans” (TheCriticalDri1, 2026).
Critics might dismiss it as political theater. However, these awards transcend politics and unite us around shared values of courage and sacrifice. Another user @BrandonStraka shared “President Donald Trump is being praised nationwide after spotting military servicemen at the MELANIA premiere and inviting them up to his private suite — supporters say that’s why morale is soaring because Trump respects these men above all” (BrandonStraka, 2026). And @diezba noted “Lol! CNN’s poll showed 63-36 Americans found it positive. Hard to argue with: Men’s Hockey Gold Medalists, Legion of Merit, Coast Guardsman Purple Heart, National Guardsman Medal of Honor, Nightstalker, and Medal of Honor Top Gun” (diezba, 2026). These reactions reflect widespread appreciation and help to prove that honoring our veterans resonates deeply and widely.
In a world full of challenges and upsets, recognizing heroes like this brings us together. It reminds us of the principles that made America great and encourages us to support those who protect our freedoms. As we face uncertain times, let us applaud efforts that celebrate our nation’s best of the best.
