The future of Iran’s national soccer team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is now uncertain following the recent U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iranian territory. The head of the Iranian Football Federation signaled that participation in the global tournament may no longer be realistic given the rapidly escalating situation.

Speaking to the Iranian sports outlet Varzesh3, federation president Mehdi Taj expressed deep pessimism about the team’s prospects.

“What is certain is that after this attack, we cannot be expected to look forward to the World Cup with hope,” Taj said, reflecting the shock and uncertainty gripping the country’s sporting community.

Escalating Conflict Casts Shadow Over Tournament

The comments come after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel targeted Tehran and key government installations over the weekend. In the opening round of attacks, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, was reportedly killed — a development that has dramatically altered the political landscape and heightened tensions across the region.

With instability unfolding at home, questions now surround whether Iran will be able — or willing — to participate in one of the world’s most watched sporting events.

Iran’s Scheduled Matches in the United States

Iran had been drawn into Group G for the 2026 tournament and was set to play several matches on American soil. According to the Associated Press, Iran was scheduled to face New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, followed by a match against Belgium on June 21. The team was then slated to travel to Seattle for a June 26 match against Egypt.

The 2026 World Cup, organized by FIFA, is being jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19. It will mark the first time the tournament features an expanded 48-team format.

Travel and Political Complications

Even before the latest escalation, political tensions between Washington and Tehran had created complications for Iranian fans. During the Trump administration, a travel ban restricted entry into the United States for nationals from several countries, including Iran, limiting supporters’ ability to attend matches.

With diplomatic relations severely strained and military hostilities now intensifying, logistical challenges could further complicate Iran’s potential participation. Issues such as player travel, visas, security coordination, and diplomatic clearances may all be affected.

FIFA Yet to Comment

As of now, FIFA has not issued an official statement regarding Iran’s status in the tournament. The governing body typically maintains a strict stance on keeping politics separate from sport, but geopolitical crises have historically forced difficult decisions about team eligibility and participation.

For Iranian players and fans, the uncertainty adds emotional weight to an already turbulent moment. The World Cup often serves as a unifying source of national pride, but with the country facing internal upheaval and international conflict, even the prospect of competing on soccer’s biggest stage appears clouded.

Whether Iran ultimately appears at the 2026 World Cup remains unclear. What is certain is that the intersection of global politics and international sport is once again taking center stage — leaving athletes and fans caught in the middle.
