OpenAI, the company behind the widely used ChatGPT, announced Friday that it has secured $110 billion in new funding from a trio of global technology powerhouses — Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank — catapulting the company’s pre-money valuation to an astounding $730 billion.
The announcement marks one of the largest single funding rounds in the history of artificial intelligence companies and underscores the growing importance of AI infrastructure and global deployment in shaping the technology sector.
OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman revealed that Amazon is leading the round with a $50 billion commitment, while Nvidia and SoftBank are each contributing $30 billion. Additional investors are expected to join the round in the coming months as OpenAI continues to expand its reach. Under the agreement, Amazon will initially invest $15 billion, with the remaining $35 billion scheduled to follow later under pre-agreed terms.
“These partnerships expand our global reach, deepen our infrastructure, and strengthen our balance sheet so we can bring frontier AI to more people, more businesses, and more communities worldwide,” Altman said in a statement.
OpenAI reported that its ChatGPT platform now boasts more than 900 million weekly active users and over 50 million paying consumer subscribers, highlighting its rapid adoption and growing influence across multiple sectors. The company emphasized that it is entering a new phase where advanced AI moves from research labs into everyday applications at global scale. Altman explained, “Leadership will be defined by who can scale infrastructure fast enough to meet demand and turn that capacity into products people rely on. This funding and these partnerships let us do both, and move faster on our mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity.”
As part of the expanded collaboration, OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) will scale up their existing multiyear deal, which was previously valued at $38 billion, adding an additional $100 billion over eight years. The partnership will focus on delivering new AI capabilities to enterprises and making AWS the exclusive third-party cloud distribution provider for OpenAI Frontier. The companies will also collaborate on building customized AI models for Amazon’s customer-facing applications, allowing developers to integrate advanced AI functionality into Amazon’s suite of services.
OpenAI confirmed that it is simultaneously expanding its partnership with Nvidia, leveraging the company’s AI-focused graphics processing units and supercomputing infrastructure to accelerate model training and deployment. While OpenAI has maintained a strong relationship with Microsoft since 2019, the company emphasized that the new funding and partnerships “in no way change the terms” of its collaboration with Microsoft, which remains central to OpenAI’s cloud strategy.
Industry analysts note that this massive injection of capital positions OpenAI to not only scale its existing offerings but also push forward with research into artificial general intelligence (AGI) — the next frontier of AI development that aims to create machines capable of performing tasks across a broad range of domains with human-like flexibility. With hundreds of billions in new funding, OpenAI can accelerate infrastructure expansion, enhance computing capacity, and fund the rapid rollout of AI products for both enterprise and consumer use.
The funding round also reflects a growing trend among technology giants to secure strategic stakes in AI development. Amazon’s leading role signals its ambition to integrate cutting-edge AI into its vast e-commerce and cloud ecosystems, while Nvidia’s involvement highlights the company’s critical role as a hardware provider for large-scale AI computations. SoftBank’s investment aligns with its ongoing strategy of backing transformative technology platforms with global reach.
OpenAI’s CEO Altman concluded that the new capital and strategic alliances will enable the company to “move faster, scale smarter, and reach more people worldwide, while ensuring the benefits of advanced AI are widely shared.” The company plans to use the funds to accelerate its roadmap, improve safety measures for AI deployment, and expand access to its suite of generative AI tools.
This funding announcement comes amid a period of intense competition in the AI sector, with rivals such as Anthropic, Google DeepMind, and others racing to develop large language models and AI applications at commercial scale. With this infusion, OpenAI reinforces its position as a global leader in AI innovation and infrastructure, setting the stage for a new era of AI-powered products and services that could transform industries ranging from finance to healthcare, entertainment, and beyond.
The move represents a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of artificial intelligence, demonstrating the appetite among major tech players to invest heavily in companies that have the potential to define the future of work, communication, and human-computer interaction.
