North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised his country’s improving economy and regional standing as he opened the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea Congress, a major political gathering expected to shape domestic and foreign policy for the next five years and reinforce his family’s grip on power.

State media outlet Korean Central News Agency reported that the congress began in Pyongyang with Kim delivering a speech centered largely on economic progress. His remarks highlighted what he described as “irreversible” gains since the previous congress in 2021, held during the disruptions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kim said the country now faces urgent tasks to boost economic development, raise living standards and accelerate transformation across state and social sectors. KCNA said the multi-day meeting would define major policy goals and strengthen party organization, though specific agenda details were not immediately disclosed.

The congress comes as North Korea seeks to balance economic recovery with continued military development. Analysts say Pyongyang has used Russia’s war on Ukraine to deepen ties with Russia, providing troops and equipment that may yield economic support and military technology in return. The country has also pursued closer engagement with China, its primary ally and trading partner.

About 5,000 delegates are attending, including members of the party’s central leadership. Observers in South Korea said participation levels appear similar to the 2021 gathering and that officials are watching for signals on inter-Korean relations.

Experts expect Kim to outline new economic targets and further plans to expand North Korea’s nuclear-armed military. Intelligence officials are also monitoring whether the congress could elevate his teenage daughter, Kim Ju Ae, as a potential successor, hinting at a fourth-generation leadership transition.
