Bondi faced questions from lawmakers on several high-profile issues currently under the purview of the Justice Department, including the agency’s handling of the so-called Epstein Files — millions of pages of records related to the late financier and convicted sex offender and his connections to prominent individuals.
Congress passed legislation several months ago requiring the Department of Justice to release all documents by a specified deadline. However, the department has not yet met that deadline, citing the extensive volume of materials and the need to redact sensitive information to protect victims and others named in the files.
Lawmakers also questioned Bondi about the FBI’s seizure of 2020 election ballots in Georgia last month. Federal agents collected the ballots to review them as part of an investigation into alleged voter fraud.
In addition, Bondi was expected to address inquiries regarding the Justice Department’s role in the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota, according to NewsMax.com.
The hearing marks one of Bondi’s first major appearances before the committee since taking office, as members of Congress seek clarification on the department’s priorities and ongoing investigations.
