We’re all reminiscing on 2016. Hard to believe it was a decade ago. Even though it wasn’t that long ago, it feels like ages with the way things have changed. Now there were some good things about 2016. The fashion. The music. The fact that you could post whatever you want on Instagram instead of having a perfectly curated feed. It was my last year of high school, so there’s some nostalgia there for me too.
2016 was also my first year of voting. I even went home to Connecticut from my college in New Jersey to vote after my absentee ballot didn’t come in the mail. My family and I say that November 7, 2016 was the last normal day in our country. And we don’t say it as a joke. Because that was the last chance for us as a country to fix a lot of problems.
With everything that both Trump administrations have done, we’re all wondering what we can do to fix it. The answer was, vote for Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election. And yes, I know she won the popular vote, but that’s not how the presidency is decided. Because Trump got into office in 2016, he was able to appoint three justices on the Supreme Court. And that’s why Roe vs. Wade was overturned in 2022, despite Joe Biden being in office. Now, many people blame Biden for not codifying Roe, but they overlook that he neither had the votes to do so, and that Trump’s appointed justices were the ones who did this.
I distinctly remember Tweets from well-known accounts dismissing the impact the Supreme Court would have, and that Clinton was “fear-mongering” when she brought up that a Republican presidency could add at least two judges to the bench. And those same people seem to refuse to blame Trump for these decisions, and it makes me want to tear my hair out.
Since Trump has had majorities in both of his presidencies, he’s been able to make a lot of decisions. And especially now, he has a lot less Republicans willing to stand up to him, or reign him in, unlike before. It’ll take about two maybe three Democratic presidents to fix everything. Change isn’t going to instantly happen. If you wanted that, it’s long gone.
