Israeli Air Force fighter jets were scrambled on Sunday, to intercept and escort a Wizz Air flight from London to Tel Aviv following a mid-air security alert triggered by a passenger’s prank WiFi hotspot name.
The incident, which unfolded aboard flight W95301, highlighted the heightened aviation security measures in the region amid ongoing tensions.
The Airbus A321neo departed from London Luton Airport en route to Ben Gurion International Airport when passengers noticed a personal WiFi hotspot named “terrorist” in both Hebrew (“machabel”) and Arabic. Reports indicate that at least one passenger also received threatening messages, possibly via AirDrop or similar file-sharing features, escalating fears of an onboard threat. The flight crew promptly notified air traffic control at Ben Gurion, adhering to standard protocols for potential in-flight emergencies.
As the aircraft approached Israeli airspace over the Mediterranean Sea, Israeli authorities dispatched quick-reaction alert (QRA) fighter jets to shadow the plane. The Wizz Air jet was temporarily held outside national airspace while security assessments were conducted. Once cleared, it proceeded to land safely at Ben Gurion Airport around midday local time.
Upon touchdown, specialized security teams from the Israel Airports Authority and police boarded the aircraft.
All passengers and their luggage underwent thorough screening, with no explosives, weapons, or other threats discovered.
Investigations revealed that the hotspot belonged to a teenage passenger who had changed the name as a joke, unaware of the severe consequences.
The minor was identified and is expected to face questioning.
Wizz Air confirmed the safe landing and cooperated fully with authorities, emphasizing passenger safety as their top priority.
The airline stated that the incident caused no injuries or disruptions beyond the security checks. Israeli officials described the response as standard procedure for any perceived threat, underscoring the zero-tolerance approach to aviation security in a volatile geopolitical context.
