A newly surfaced federal statement announcing Jeffrey Epstein’s death bears a date one day earlier than the official timeline, raising fresh questions as additional records detail gaps in surveillance and monitoring.

A previously issued statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has resurfaced showing that federal prosecutors publicly declared Jeffrey Epstein dead on Aug. 9, 2019—one day before authorities say he was discovered unresponsive in his jail cell.

The document, dated Friday, Aug. 9, states that Epstein “had been found unresponsive in his cell and pronounced dead shortly thereafter,” despite the widely accepted timeline that Epstein was discovered during morning rounds on Aug. 10 at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan. The discrepancy has drawn renewed scrutiny as additional investigative records related to Epstein’s death continue to emerge.

A federal statement announcing Jeffrey Epstein’s death has surfaced with a date of August 9, 2019 – one day before he was officially found dead.

In the statement, prosecutors described the development as “disturbing” and acknowledged the impact Epstein’s death would have on pending legal proceedings involving sex trafficking charges. The statement emphasized that the office remained committed to pursuing accountability and supporting victims who had come forward or were considering doing so.

Epstein had been held at the Manhattan facility since July 7, 2019, after being charged with sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy. His death was later ruled a suicide by hanging.

Newly released records, reported by The Daily Mail, add further detail to the unresolved questions surrounding the circumstances of his final hours. According to those records, investigators from the FBI and the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General reviewed surveillance footage that appeared to show an unidentified figure moving toward the tier where Epstein was housed during overnight hours.

The footage reportedly captured an orange-colored shape ascending a staircase near Epstein’s housing unit. Investigators documented the movement but did not publicly determine whether the figure was connected to Epstein or his death. Officials also noted that malfunctions and limitations within the surveillance system prevented a complete reconstruction of activity inside the unit during the relevant period.

Authorities have previously acknowledged that guards assigned to monitor Epstein failed to perform required checks, and that cameras covering areas near his cell were not fully operational. Despite multiple investigations, a comprehensive, minute-by-minute account of Epstein’s final hours has not been publicly established.

The emergence of the Aug. 9-dated statement adds another unresolved inconsistency to a case that has continued to generate public scrutiny years after Epstein’s death.
