During last year’s Operation Ice Splash the temperature was a balmy 27 degrees

MAHOPAC- Forecast 15 to 20 below zero wind chills prompted the Mahopac Veterans of Foreign Wars to again postpone their fundraiser—Operation Ice Splash 2026.

The event was initially cancelled last month due to a snowstorm and had been rescheduled for today. However, with air temperatures in the single digits and wind chills making it feel more like Alaska than Putnam County, organizers postponed the event until March 14.

Last February, dozens of men, women and children braved 27 degree air temperatures by jumping into Lake Mahopac for Operation Ice Splash 2025.

The event attracted some 500 onlookers who cheered as more than 100 participants entered the lake from a dock behind the Mahopac VFW Post while members of the Mahopac and Mahopac Falls Fire Departments dressed in wet suits provided support to the jumpers if needed.

The event raised money for the VFW which benefits local veterans countywide.
