U.S. equity markets staged a powerful rebound Friday, pushing the Dow Jones Industrial Average above 50,000 for the first time in its history as investors returned to stocks after three days of broad market selling tied to turbulence in technology shares, precious metals, and cryptocurrencies.
The Dow crossed the 50,000 threshold shortly after 2:30 p.m. Eastern time, surging roughly 2.5 percent, or 1,207 points, in afternoon trading. The rally marked a major milestone for the 30-stock index and came amid strong earnings reports, signs of easing inflation pressures, and renewed expectations that interest-rate cuts could be ahead.
President Donald Trump celebrated the market milestone in a post on Truth Social, writing, “The Dow Jones Industrial Average just hit 50,000 for the first time in History. CONGRATULATIONS AMERICA!”
The broader market also advanced sharply. The Nasdaq Composite climbed about 1.9 percent, while the S&P 500 gained roughly 1.75 percent, reflecting widespread buying across sectors. Investors pointed to continued confidence in U.S. consumer spending, resilience in the domestic economy, and gains tied to artificial-intelligence-driven growth in technology and industrial companies.
The historic move followed a volatile week in which markets were pressured by sharp declines in cryptocurrencies and technology stocks, alongside dramatic swings in precious metals. Silver had fallen roughly 30 percent from recent highs, while gold slid from about $5,600 per ounce to just over $4,500 earlier in the week before rebounding to near $5,000 on Friday.
The Dow’s rise to 50,000 capped a rapid climb in recent years. The index first crossed 1,000 in 1972, reached 10,000 during the dot-com boom in 1999, surpassed 20,000 in 2017, and moved above 30,000 in 2020 amid optimism during the pandemic recovery. It topped 40,000 for the first time in 2024, making the leap to 50,000 in just 14 months, the fastest advance between major 10,000-point milestones.
Market participants cited optimism surrounding pro-growth policies, expectations of tax relief, and sustained investment in artificial intelligence as contributing factors behind Friday’s rally. Despite recent volatility, the milestone underscored renewed investor confidence following a turbulent stretch across global markets.
