Washington, D.C. – Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Michael Rigas traveled to Japan from January 25 to 28 as part of efforts to strengthen U.S. Embassy Tokyo’s operations and advance U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
According to a State Department press release, Deputy Secretary Rigas met with senior Japanese officials during the visit to reaffirm the strength of the U.S.-Japan alliance and underscore shared strategic priorities between the two nations.
While in Tokyo, Rigas attended a dedication dinner formally naming the Chief of Mission Residence as MacArthur House, honoring General Douglas MacArthur’s lasting contributions to shaping the modern U.S.-Japan alliance following World War II.
The event also marked the launch of Mission Japan’s “Freedom 250” campaign, an initiative aimed at commemorating the United States’ upcoming semi-quincentennial anniversary by highlighting defining moments that advance American interests and strengthen the bilateral relationship.
State Department officials said the trip reflects the administration’s continued commitment to the Indo-Pacific and builds on broader efforts to promote a free, open, and secure region amid evolving global challenges.
