President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has no intention of asking Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to step down, stating that she is doing a “very good job” as criticism mounts over federal immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota.

Trump addressed Noem’s status during a brief exchange with reporters outside the White House, where he was asked directly whether she would resign.

“Is Kristi Noem going to step down?” a reporter asked.

“No,” Trump replied.

The president later said he believes Noem is performing well in her role, citing her work related to border security and immigration enforcement.

Trump’s comments come as Noem faces intensified scrutiny following the fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens during federal operations in Minnesota this month. The incidents have prompted protests, political backlash, and calls from some Democratic lawmakers for changes to leadership at the Department of Homeland Security.

Earlier Tuesday, Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., publicly urged Trump to fire Noem. In a post on X, Fetterman accused her of failing to uphold DHS’s mission and warned Trump against retaining what he described as ineffective leadership.

“I make a direct appeal to immediately fire Sec. Noem,” Fetterman wrote. “Americans have died. She is betraying DHS’s core mission and trashing your border security legacy. DO NOT make the mistake President Biden made for not firing a grossly incompetent DHS Secretary.”

Fetterman, who has at times taken a more pragmatic stance than many Democrats on immigration and border security, has previously cautioned his party against calls to abolish U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. His demand for Noem’s removal followed the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota, which occurred during heightened federal enforcement activity.

“Ms. Good and Mr. Pretti should still be alive. My family grieves for theirs,” Fetterman said in a statement Monday. “The operation in Minneapolis should stand down and immediately end. It has become an ungovernable and dangerous urban theatre for civilians and law enforcement that is incompatible with the American spirit.”

The Trump administration has defended its immigration enforcement efforts, emphasizing a focus on border security and the removal of individuals in the country illegally. Despite the criticism, Trump’s remarks indicated continued confidence in Noem’s leadership as the administration reviews its operations amid ongoing controversy.
