Former UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman has defected from the Conservative Party and formally joined Nigel Farage’s Reform UK, marking one of the most significant political realignments on the British right in recent years.

The move follows a string of high-profile Conservative defections to Reform UK, including former shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick, as the party continues to lead national polling and attract senior figures frustrated with the direction of the Tories.

According to Sky News, Braverman was unveiled by Farage at an event launching “Veterans for Reform,” where she confirmed she had resigned the Conservative whip. The announcement was met with loud applause from attendees.

Braverman served as home secretary under multiple prime ministers, including Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, and had become one of the most prominent voices on the Conservative right during the party’s final years in government.

Farage publicly welcomed Braverman to Reform UK in a social media post announcing her defection, describing her as a major addition to the party’s growing ranks. In remarks captured during the event, Farage asked, “Who is with us? The silent, decent majority of law-abiding people in this country,” while suggesting that further senior political figures could soon follow Braverman’s lead.

Speaking after her defection, Braverman said she felt politically aligned with Reform UK’s platform and leadership. “I feel like I’ve come home,” she said in remarks broadcast by Sky News. “Because I believe that a better future is possible for us, I am joining Reform UK.”

Braverman said her decision was driven by what she described as a national crisis and a failure of mainstream politics to address core issues. “Loyalty demands honesty and honesty compels me to say this: today Britain is indeed broken,” she said. “She is suffering. She is not well. Immigration is out of control. Our public services are on their knees. People don’t feel safe.”

She also warned of long-term consequences if current trends continue. “Our youngsters are leaving the country for better futures elsewhere. We can’t even defend ourselves and our nation stands weak and humiliated on the world stage,” she said.

Braverman had been one of the few senior figures in recent Conservative governments consistently associated with hard-line positions on immigration, national sovereignty and law and order. In recent months, she had publicly argued for a united right-wing movement to challenge what she described as a left-wing Labour government.

Her defection represents another blow to the Conservatives as Reform UK consolidates support among voters and politicians disillusioned with the traditional two-party system. Farage and Reform UK officials have said the party is positioning itself as the primary vehicle for right-of-center voters ahead of the next general election.
