Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz has agreed to cooperate with the Trump administration’s deportation efforts following a phone call with President Donald Trump, marking a shift after weeks of resistance and escalating tensions surrounding federal immigration enforcement in the state. Trump said Walz caved to the administration’s agenda and agreed to assist in identifying and transferring criminal illegal immigrants held by Minnesota authorities.

In a statement issued by the president, Trump said Walz initiated the call and expressed a willingness to work with federal officials. “Governor Tim Walz called me with the request to work together with respect to Minnesota. It was a very good call, and we, actually, seemed to be on a similar wavelength,” Trump said. He added that he instructed Border Czar Tom Homan to contact Walz and clarified that federal authorities are seeking “any and all Criminals that they have in their possession.”

Trump said Walz “very respectfully, understood that,” and welcomed Homan’s planned visit to Minnesota. The president also cited what he described as reductions in crime following federal operations in other cities, saying similar efforts could further reduce crime in Minnesota.

The development follows a period of heightened unrest in the state, during which Walz has faced scrutiny for policies critics say allowed confrontations between protesters and federal immigration officials. Federal investigators have examined allegations that Walz and other state and local officials permitted street mobs to battle the federal government.

Over the weekend, anti-ICE protesters targeted a Minneapolis hotel believed to be housing federal agents.

Investigations following those incidents identified what officials described as a coordinated network of anti-ICE activists. That network has been uncovered through encrypted communications, shared logistics, and organized mobilization ahead of federal enforcement actions.

As of Monday, Minnesota officials had not issued a public response detailing how cooperation with federal authorities will be implemented. Trump said he expects further discussions with Walz in the near future as Tom Homan prepares to engage state officials on enforcement coordination.
