SOUTHEAST- Two years ago this week, Brewster High School graduate and local businessman Nick Durante announced his intention to become Southeast supervisor, succeeding Tony Hay.
Now, 24 months later, Durante, who was employed for 30 years as a lineman for Verizon prior to opening a liquor store in Brewster, is packing his bags and leaving the town’s chief executive position February 6.
During an interview Friday the 50 year old Durante admitted not being a politician: “It’s getting to me since I’ve discovered that unless I do political things the town will suffer. The stress levels have gotten to be too much for me. I owe a lot to the residents of Southeast but I hope the residents understand my decision. Politics is not what it used to be. ”
Durante said he met with his Town Board and informed them of his decision.
“I told them whomever they decide to appoint will receive my full cooperation and assistance,” he said.
When running for office in November 2023 Durante commended residents of greater Brewster for “working hard. The residents of Southeast want and need someone who is willing to work hard with them and for them. Owning a successful business provided me with valuable experience when it comes to budgeting, inventory, vendor relationships, but most importantly, creating a connection with so many wonderful people in this community.”
Durante, who has been a resident of Southeast since the age of five, called on the new supervisor to “bring our community together. Over the years many people have relocated to greater Brewster. I’d like to close that separation resulting in a more cohesive and community minded community for everyone.”
