Since the premiere of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2020, one thing that has been constant in the franchise is the fans’ love for comedian and actor Jim Carrey’s character Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Despite his well-known disinterest in sequels, Carrey made an exception for the Sonic franchise when he returned to his role of Dr. Robotnik for the second installment of Sonic in 2022.

After the premiere of Sonic 2, Carrey began speaking of retirement. During an interview with ‘Access Hollywood,’ Carrey was asked how serious he was about retiring. He replied…”Fairly serious…Well, I’m retiring. Yeah, probably. I’m being fairly serious,” Carrey said. “It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.”

For many of Carrey’s fans, this seemed like the end of his illustrious career.

Much to fans’ surprise, Paramount Studios announced in 2024 that Jim Carrey would again return for Sonic 3, playing two versions of Dr. Robotnik.

Since the premiere of Sonic 3 and the confirmation of Sonic 4 in production, fans have waited and speculated whether Sonic 3 was really Carrey’s final movie. When asked if he’d do Sonic 4, Carrey responded by stating, “I’m definitely open; I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea and if I go, ‘That sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans.”

This certainly leaves the door open for Carrey to return. For those fans who hope for Carrey’s return, his attachment to Sonic the Hedgehog may not be over quite yet. In fact, a new insider report claims that Paramount is currently actively pursuing Jim Carrey to return as Dr. Ivo Robotnik in Sonic 4.

No official announcements have been made yet, but for fans hoping to see him back, Carrey’s strong ties to the Sonic franchise—and reports that Paramount is actively courting him for Sonic 4—indicate his return could be on the horizon.

Sonic 4 is set to open in theaters on March 19, 2027.
