POUGHKEEPSIE – Just a few weeks after receiving , work has begun on the Wallace Campus project at 331 Main Street in the City of Poughkeepsie. The project, being constructed on Main Street near Catharine Street, received $2.2 million in funding from the Dutchess County Housing Trust Fund in 2023. In 2022, the project received $750,00 in state funding to assist in developing the “Wallage Green” portion of the development.
Scaffolding has been erected on the Main Street side of the project, while demolition is taking place in the rear of the existing structures.
The site is not without controversy. In 2022, Kirchner Realty and others, with alleged plans to redevelop the former Up To Date building just down the street from Wallace, sued to stop the Wallace Campus Management (WCM)project, saying it would create an added burden to the police department and other city services. .
The Wallace Campus is a 187-unit affordable and supportive housing development that includes the transformation of a former department store as well as new construction. All units will be affordable to households earning up to 80 percent of the Area Median Income. Developed by Mega Development and Ametrine Group. The non-building elements of the project include a large landscaped open space within the center of the campus, called “Wallace Green”, open to the public on the same schedule as public parks in the City. The project also provides a new pedestrian connection between Main Street and Mill Street at Conklin Street. The project, when proposed, received strong support from then-Mayor Rob Rolison, who now represents Poughkeepsie in the state senate.
