MIDDLETOWN – The Orange County Health Department has cited the City of Middletown for “over-feeding” fluoride into its water system for four hours.

The incident occurred on November 10, 2025, but was not discovered until December 9, 2025 when officials were doing calculations.

The violation is for not reporting the incident within 48 hours.

Public Works Commissioner Jacob Tawil said they do not take the incident lightly.

“We took several steps. We unplugged the system the next day after it happened, found out exactly what took place, interviewed people, took it off-line, worked with the Department of Health and did some modifications so that minimized the potential of this over-feed from every occurring again,” he said.

Tawil said letters have gone out to all water system users explaining any potential long-term effects of drinking the water during that time period.
