Kharyssa Richardson delivered the best scoring performance of her career and Favour Nwaedozi controlled the paint as Mississippi State seized on a poor shooting night from No. 7 Kentucky to earn a 71-59 victory on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.
Richardson finished with a career-high 23 points to lead the Bulldogs, while Nwaedozi posted a commanding double-double with 10 points and 21 rebounds, anchoring a dominant effort on the boards. Mississippi State held a decisive 52-35 rebounding advantage that steadily wore down the Wildcats over four quarters.
Kentucky struggled offensively throughout the afternoon, shooting just 32% from the field and connecting on only five of 29 attempts from 3-point range. Those shooting woes proved costly, particularly in the second half, as Mississippi State gradually took control.
The Wildcats carried a slim 33-30 lead into halftime, but the momentum shifted quickly after the break. Mississippi State opened the third quarter with renewed energy on both ends of the floor, outscoring Kentucky 18-11 in the period to turn a close contest into a manageable cushion. The Bulldogs’ surge was fueled by a 15-2 run that featured back-to-back 3-pointers from Traynna Crisp and a five-point burst from Richardson, who repeatedly found gaps in Kentucky’s defense.
Crisp provided a timely scoring spark off the perimeter, finishing with 16 points while knocking down four of her five shots from beyond the arc. Richardson complemented her scoring with seven rebounds, helping Mississippi State maintain control in transition and on second-chance opportunities.
Nwaedozi’s presence inside proved decisive. She pulled down rebounds on both ends of the floor, limiting Kentucky to one-and-done possessions while creating extra opportunities for the Bulldogs. Her 21 rebounds were a major factor in Mississippi State’s ability to pull away late.
Kentucky was led by Tonie Morgan, who scored 15 points and dished out seven assists while trying to keep the Wildcats within striking distance. Asia Boone and Amiela Hassett each added 11 points, and Clara Strack recorded a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. However, Strack struggled to find her shooting touch, going just 3 of 16 from the field as Kentucky’s offense sputtered.
Mississippi State improved to 15-5 overall and 2-4 in Southeastern Conference play with the win, while Kentucky fell to 17-3 and 4-2 in league action.
Kentucky will look to regroup when it travels to Tennessee on Thursday night, while Mississippi State will aim to build on the victory when it visits Alabama on Saturday.
