In a deadly train accident, at least 21 people lost their lives and over a hundred injured in Spain. The devastating train collision occurred in southern Spain on Sunday.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente said that the numbers of the deaths cannot be confirmed.

“The latest information coming in is very serious. The last units of the Iryo train heading toward Madrid have derailed, with those cars invading the opposite track where, at that moment, a Renfe train heading toward Huelva was traveling. The impact was terrible, causing the first two units of the Renfe train to be thrown off as a result. The number of victims cannot be confirmed at this time. The fundamental priority now is to assist the victims,” Puente said on his X handle.

One of the trains involved in the accident was traveling from Malaga to Madrid and the other from Madrid to Huelva, derailed near Adamuz, Cordoba province, around 6:40 p.m.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, with 25 people seriously hurt.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, with authorities assessing damage and casualties.

The Iryo train, operated by a private company partly owned by Italian state railway group Ferrovie dello Stato, was carrying approximately 300 passengers. The Renfe train’s carriages were badly damaged, with twisted metal and seats scattered everywhere.
