TOWN OF WALLKILL – Michele Baker has worked in the Town of Wallkill Department of Public Works for over 30 years, starting as a confidential assistant to the commissioner. She worked up the ladder, most recently to the post of deputy commissioner, and now, with a new administration at town hall, she has been named commissioner.
She becomes the first woman to hold the top job in Wallkill and Orange County.
Baker’s appointment “is a historic and well-deserved recognition of her hard work and leadership,” said Town Supervisor Frank DenDanto III. “Her impact on the Town of Wallkill and Orange County is undeniable, and we are confident that she will continue to lead with vision, dedication, and integrity.”
Baker said she is “proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, but there is still much work to be done.”
In addition to her work in DPW, she serves as the chief grant administrator for the town, where she successfully secured over $34 million in state and federal funding to enhance local infrastructure, including improvements to water and sewer systems, roads, parks, and community buildings, all without passing the costs on to local taxpayers.
