At the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, actor Mark Ruffalo used his moment on the red carpet to make a series of harsh criticisms about U.S. President Donald Trump and the current political climate in America.

Ruffalo, known for his outspoken views, framed his remarks around a protest gesture—the wearing of a “BE GOOD” lapel pin honoring Renee Nicole Good, a Minnesota woman who was fatally shot during a federal immigration operation.

In the ensuing media interviews, Ruffalo did not hold back. Speaking to reporters, he expressed frustration and alarm at a range of political issues, from immigration enforcement actions to international military involvement, and he delivered a blistering attack on Trump’s character and leadership.

Specifically, Ruffalo made comments about:

  • Renee Nicole Good’s death, describing it as a murder connected to ICE actions.
  • Claims about U.S. policy in Venezuela, including statements like “we’re in the middle of a war with Venezuela that we illegally invaded,” and that the vice president was “lying about what’s happening.”
  • Direct criticism of Trump’s character, calling him a “convicted felon,” and using terms such as “convicted rapist” and “pedophile,” and labeling him “the worst human being in the world.”

Supporters of Ruffalo’s stance see his speech as a bold example of a high-profile figure using a major entertainment platform to speak about issues they believe are deeply important.

Critics, however, argue that some of the language used by Ruffalo crosses a line into defamatory territory especially because certain phrases he applied to Trump, like “convicted rapist” and “pedophile,” do not reflect criminal convictions under U.S. law but rather personal characterizations tied to broader political grievances.

Adding to the controversy, other commentators have suggested that statements like this risk opening up public figures to defamation claims, arguing that unchecked claims of criminal behavior could result in costly legal action.

Mark Ruffalo on Donald Trump: “The guy is a convicted felon, a convicted rapist, he’s a pedophile. He’s the worst human being in the world. If we’re relying on this guy’s morality then we’re all in a lot of trouble. I love this country and what I’m seeing here is not America” pic.twitter.com/3Iq50XzHIF

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Ruffalo’s views, his remarks at the Golden Globes have triggered debate about the boundaries between political commentary, free expression, and responsible speech especially when such comments are attached to highly visible public events.
