Actor Kiefer Sutherland, a prominent film and television star whose career spans more than four decades, was arrested early Monday in Hollywood following an alleged physical assault and threats against a ride-share driver, Los Angeles police said.
Sutherland, 59, was taken into custody at the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue after officers responded to a reported assault at approximately 12:15 a.m., according to Los Angeles Police Officer Kevin Terzes. Police allege that Sutherland entered a ride-share vehicle and became involved in a confrontation with the driver.
“The investigation determined that the suspect, later identified as Kiefer Sutherland, entered a rideshare vehicle, physically assaulted the driver (the victim), and made criminal threats toward the victim,” Terzes said in an email statement Tuesday.
Authorities said the driver did not suffer injuries requiring medical treatment at the scene. The incident remains under investigation, and police have not released additional details about what led to the alleged confrontation.
According to Los Angeles County jail records, Sutherland was booked shortly after 4 a.m. on an unspecified felony charge. Bail was set at $50,000, and he was released roughly seven hours later after posting bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 2.
Representatives for Sutherland did not immediately respond to requests for comment Tuesday night.
Sutherland rose to fame in the 1980s with roles that established him as a heartthrob and rebellious figure in films such as “The Lost Boys” and “Stand by Me.” He later reinvented his career on television, earning widespread acclaim for his portrayal of counterterrorism agent Jack Bauer on the hit series “24,” which aired during the 2000s.
He is the son of the late Donald Sutherland, a celebrated actor whose career also spanned decades across film and television. As the legal process moves forward, the case adds an unexpected chapter to Kiefer Sutherland’s long and influential career in Hollywood.
