President Donald Trump announced Monday a sweeping new trade warning aimed at Iran and its global business partners, declaring that any country continuing to do business with Tehran will be hit with a hefty 25% tariff on all trade conducted with the United States.
According to Trump, the punitive measure takes effect immediately. The former president made the announcement in a post on his Truth Social platform, framing the move as definitive and non-negotiable.
“Any country doing business with Iran will face a 25% tariff on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote. He underscored the finality of the decision by adding, “This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
While the declaration signals a dramatic escalation in economic pressure on Iran, key details surrounding the implementation of the tariffs remain unclear. It is not yet known how broadly the policy would be enforced, which sectors would be most affected, or whether exemptions might apply.
The White House did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for clarification or additional information regarding the scope and mechanics of the proposed tariffs.
The announcement appears to be part of a broader effort to economically isolate Iran at a moment of intense internal turmoil. The oil-rich Middle Eastern nation is currently grappling with a wave of widespread anti-government protests, as authorities struggle to contain public dissent fueled by economic hardship and political unrest.
Trump’s statement adds another layer of international pressure to an already volatile situation, signaling that nations maintaining commercial ties with Iran may soon face significant economic consequences from Washington.
