WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump escalated economic pressure on Iran Monday, announcing an immediate 25% tariff on any nation continuing to do business with the Islamic Republic, even as his administration weighs military strikes in response to Tehran’s violent suppression of nationwide protests.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared the measure “final and conclusive,” stating: “Effective immediately, any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America. This Order is final and conclusive. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The announcement comes as Iran’s regime faces its most severe internal challenge in decades, with protests now in their 14th day and a death toll estimated in the hundreds. Demonstrators have clashed with security forces across 185 cities, chanting “death to the dictator” and setting fire to government buildings.
Military Action on the Table
Behind the scenes, Trump is considering a range of responses, including airstrikes on regime sites, cyberattacks, and expanded sanctions, according to The Wall Street Journal. While the president has not made a final decision, he is expected to meet with senior aides Tuesday to assess options.
