Former Trump adviser Sam Nunberg praised the United States’ capture of Venezuela’s deposed strongman Nicolás Maduro, calling it the “boldest action taken by a president in the Western Hemisphere” and a historic moment for American national security.

Appearing on Breitbart News Saturday, Nunberg framed the operation as a decisive and long-overdue response to what he described as the most serious external threat facing the United States in decades. According to Nunberg, Venezuela under Maduro had become an imminent national security danger rivaling the Cuban Missile Crisis.

“What we saw with this action last weekend was the boldest action taken by a president in the Western Hemisphere since really the Monroe Doctrine,” Nunberg said. “And what we have to understand is that this was frankly underreported.”

Nunberg emphasized Venezuela’s proximity to the United States, noting that the country lies roughly 1,200 miles from the southern tip of Florida, underscoring the urgency of the threat.

“Venezuela was the greatest national security imminent threat to the United States since the Cuban Missile Crisis,” he said. “And very few people were willing to talk honestly about that.”

A Strategic Threat Close to Home

Nunberg went on to outline what he described as Venezuela’s transformation over the past 25 years into a geopolitical hub for hostile foreign powers.

“Venezuela has the largest crude oil deposits in the world, it has enormous mineral wealth, and it became a vassal state of China,” he said. “It’s been run by Cuban intelligence, became a major partner of Russia, and ultimately served as the main base of operations for Iran and Hezbollah in the Western Hemisphere.”

According to Nunberg, the Maduro regime allegedly facilitated terrorist activity by providing passports, language training, and weapons access to foreign extremist groups.

“When I tell you it was a base, I mean they gave them passports, trained them in Spanish, and helped them acquire weapons,” Nunberg said. “This wasn’t theoretical. This was operational.”

Trump’s Longstanding Venezuela Strategy

Nunberg also pointed out that President Donald Trump had been warning about Venezuela long before the recent action, including during his first term.

“President Trump was threatening action against Venezuela even during his first term,” Nunberg said. “He tried to get Maduro to cut a deal.”

According to Nunberg, Trump proposed an exit arrangement that would have allowed Maduro to leave Venezuela under specific conditions.

“The deal was that Maduro could go to Saudi Arabia,” Nunberg explained. “He was not going to be allowed to go to Russia. He could take some of his people with him, and Venezuela would move toward a more democrat-friendly government.”

Criticism from Allies and a Lasting Legacy

Nunberg expressed surprise that Trump faced criticism from what he described as supposed allies and supporters, arguing that the president’s actions strengthened U.S. security both regionally and globally.

“I’m shocked that he’s being attacked by so-called friends and allies,” Nunberg said. “This is a moment where Americans should understand what was actually accomplished.”

He concluded by asserting that Trump’s actions have left a lasting strategic legacy, particularly in the Western Hemisphere.

“We’ve seen President Trump strengthen our international defense posture right here in our own hemisphere,” Nunberg said. “And one of the biggest takeaways is that China is no longer going to be controlling the Panama Canal.”

According to Nunberg, the operation against Maduro marks a turning point in U.S. foreign policy  one that signals renewed American resolve and a willingness to confront emerging threats close to home rather than ignore them.
